Explore the Emerald Isle’s Majestic Mountain Hikes

The landscapes of Ireland are something everyone should see in their life, even once. The Emerald Isle’s majestic mountain hikes are experiences you will remember for the rest of your life. Whether hiking on Purple Mountain, Wicklow mountain, or somewhere else, you will enjoy nature and witness beautiful sights. Let us introduce you if you know nothing about Ireland and its mountains.

Cuilcagh

Just like many mountains in Ireland, Cuilcagh mountain is a paradise on Earth for enthusiastic hikers. It is on the borders of two counties – one belonging to Northern Ireland and one to the Republic of Ireland. This place is tourists’ favorite for the Emerald Isle’s majestic mountain hikes.

This mountain is known as „Stairway to Heaven“ after the famous boardwalk trail. The majority of tourists take this exact route since it is one of the best hiking trails, despite there being another very popular one: the Cavan way. Even though the mountain isn’t quite tall (its highest point stands at 664 meters), you will feel on top of the world when your walk ends. Looking at the trail from the bottom, it truly looks like a way to the sky. It is needless to point out that you will enjoy a breathtaking sight when you get to the top. You will feel like you are on top of the world. That said, don’t forget to bring your camera to capture some memories. Also, dress as comfortably as you can – it’s going to be a long walk.

Purple Mountain

Another majestic mountain for nature lovers. This one is quite specific, so we should elaborate on the name. The mountain consists of red sandstone, which looks purple under a certain light. That is one of the reasons it is widely popular amongst tourists. So, if you ever plan on hiking there, bring your phone and take some photos.

It takes approximately six hours to climb Purple mountain. We should warn you that it’s not an easy climb. But once you reach a certain point, you will see that all that effort was worth it. You will see the gorgeous lake of Killarney and the valley of Laune. You will see most of Ireland by hiking since all the most beautiful sights are usually in the wilderness and nature, not in big urban cities.

The Mournes consist of the East or ‘High’ Mournes and the West or ‘Low’ Mournes. Enjoy exploring the memorable and diverse landscapes located in a relatively small area. Slive Donard

Slive Donard is the highest peak in Northern Ireland and the 19th peak on the island. At the top are the intriguing remains of two prehistoric tombs and the famous Morne Wall.
The 22-mile-long Morne Wall is an iconic landmark that spans the 15 Mournes mountain peaks. The construction lasted eighteen years, and its original purpose was to keep cattle and sheep in the catchment area of Silent Valley Reservoir.

“The Brandy Pad”

Smugglers carrying illegal products on ponies through the mountains to Hilltown created this trail in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today it is popular among hikers and nature lovers.

Tollimore Forest Park

If you find yourself in Briansford at the foot of Mount Morne, visit Tollimore Forest Park. Bring your family with you for a tour. The whole area is known for its exceptional natural beauty.

Explore the Slieve Blooms Mountains

In the central plain of Ireland lies the mountain Slieve Bloom. It is a picturesque region, spotted with beautiful little villages where time seems to stand still. Numerous trails that lead through woods and fields cut through the Slieve Bloom Mountains. Trail lengths range from 2.5 miles (4 km), ideal for beginners or family walks with children, to the multi-day 47 miles (75 km) Slieve Bloom Way. Places like these will make you fall in love with Ireland and maybe even make you think about moving there. If you decide to do so, you won’t make a mistake. But it’s a long way from the US to Ireland. Make sure to gather the right materials you need for international moving so your belongings stay undamaged. After you have settled in, just enjoy.

Wicklow Mountains

County Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland for its beautiful scenery. Many people visit this area for hiking and walking, so expect a lot of crowds, especially on weekends. One of the major destinations for all nature lovers is the Wicklow Mountains National Park which covers 20,000 hectares (49,421 acres) of forests, waterfalls, and mountain moors, including the Lugnaquilla and Liffey Head Bog complexes. The park is also home to the beautiful valley of Glendalough and its rich historical heritage sites. Well-marked trails lead you from picturesque valleys to granite peaks. You may feel brave enough to attempt to walk the entire length of Wicklow Way, which is almost 80 miles long, or you may opt for some less demanding trails. But in any case, be sure to visit the following:

Lough Tay, also known as Guinness lake, is one of the most photographed areas in the county. The filming of the famous series Vikings took place at this location.

Ballysmuttan Bridge – speaking of film locations, you’ll recognize this one if you’ve seen P.S. I Love You.

The early Christian monastic settlement of Glendallow, near Lower Lake, is also must see. St. Kevin founded it in the 6th century. Over time, it developed into a monastic city. The Normans destroyed it in 1214.
